Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School has entered a new era as staff officially moved into the school’s newly constructed building this summer. For the first time in the school’s history, the entire school community will be together under one roof when students return in September for the 2025–2026 school year.
Located in Bel Air, Homestead-Wakefield serves more than 1,000 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. For decades, the school operated in two separate buildings on opposite sides of a wooded hill. Wakefield Elementary opened in 1958, followed by Homestead Elementary in 1966. While the two schools eventually merged into one, the physical separation remained a defining aspect of the campus, until now.
The summer of 2025 marks a major milestone, as the two buildings are finally combined into one unified space. With construction completed, school staff are now working throughout the summer to unpack, organize, and finalize the new building. Students have not yet entered the space; they will be welcomed for the first time in September.
The new facility was designed to support modern teaching and learning, with updated classrooms, common areas, and infrastructure that reflect today’s educational standards and promote student well-being.
This transition reflects not only a logistical improvement, but also a meaningful step forward in the school’s long and evolving history. What began as two distinct schools, and later functioned as one, split across two campuses, now is a single, cohesive learning community.
Staff are hard at work this summer preparing for the first day of school and are excited to welcome students into the new building. In just a few short months, the hallways will be filled with learning, laughter, and the next generation of leaders.
