Congratulations to Mr. Saro on receiving a Perfect Attendance award. He volunteered his time in the cafeteria every school day this year. He also spent his time helping in the Media Center. We are so lucky to have him.

Mr. Saro
On Saturday, May 30th, students from five HCPS elementary schools participated in the Black-Eyed Susan Science Olympiad, Division A, Tournament at John Carroll School in Bel Air. A total of twelve teams competed in this engaging and academically rigorous event for students in grades 3-6.
Science Olympiads is a nationwide competition comprised of 23 events that include earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Each team may consist of up to 20 members, with students typically participating in two to three events each. The competition includes three types of events; test completion, hands-on events, and station events. Teams earn points based on their performance in each event, with overall rankings determined by the cumulative score.
For the last several months, teams have been studying science content for each of the disciplines and developing their engineering skills to compete in hands-on events. They have improved teamwork, problem solving, and science knowledge on topics such as engineering, food science, meteorology, map reading, herpetology, ecology, and rocks and minerals.
HWES won first place overall!
Students finished 1st place in:
Circuits, Code Busters, Dynamic Planet, Ecosystems, Map Reading, Owl Pellets, Pentathlon, Rocks and Minerals, and Write it/Do it.
Students finished 2nd place in:
Anatomy, 3rd grade Fast Facts, Food Science, Herpetology, Meteorology, Roller Coasters, and Tech Triathlon.

The Harford County Board of Education has approved an adjustment to the 2026-2027 calendar involving built-in inclement weather days. Schools and offices will now be closed on March 1, June 1, and April 12, 2027, and those days will be used as makeup days, in the order listed, only if needed due to inclement weather cancellations.

The adjustment reflects guidance from the Maryland State Board of Education, which has expressed a preference for makeup days to be distributed throughout the school year, and the use of virtual instruction, rather than adding days to the end of the school year.

The full, updated 2026–2027 school calendar is available here. En Español.
